The natural latex adhesive on masking tape ages and dries out from prolonged exposure to rays, heat or improper storage. Sometimes this happens before you buy the tape from the store.
First, try running a hair dryer or heat gun over the tape backing to warm and soften the adhesive. After a minute or two, you can peel the tape away. If the masking tape is really stuck on the surface, saturate the rubber adhesive with solvent and let it soak in for five to 10 minutes. Place a rag or towel over your index finger and rub the adhesive in a circular motion until it comes off.
For paper-backed tapes, like masking tape, you can apply the solvent directly to the tape and let it soak in. Scrape the tape off with a plastic scraper, razor blade or use a stiff-bristled brush.
The key to removing rubber adhesive is to let the solvent do the work for you. The more you let it soak, the easier it is to remove the adhesive. Five to 10 minutes is usually enough time.
