Overcome common moving obstacles

Forty to fifty million Americans relocate every year. Nearly seventy-nine percent of these people move themselves, without hiring professional movers. The following tips offer simple solutions and suggestions to the typical obstacles that families face while in the process of moving.

Tip 1

Depending on the quantity of items you have to move and the time you have to do it, it may be more cost-effective to move yourself, rather than hiring a mover. Or, consider hiring a mover for larger items (like furniture and appliances) and do the rest yourself.

Tip 2

Overestimate the time you will need to complete the move.

·         Moving almost always takes longer than first anticipated.

·         Be smart and plan extra time for miscellaneous tasks that can potentially alter your schedule.

 

Tip 3

Don’t overestimate yourself.

·         Know your weaknesses and don’t try to move any objects that are too heavy for you to carry.

·         Ask family and friends to help.

Tip 4

Avoid using old, worn boxes for packing; they are much more likely to break and cause damage to your belongings.

Tip 5

Don’t over-pack boxes. 

        ·         A common mistake many people make is using oversized boxes to pack a lot of things.

·         The heavier the box, the harder it is to move, and the more likely it is to fallout on the bottom.

·         If you can’t lift it easily, it’s too heavy!  Boxes shouldn’t weigh more than fifty pounds. (And remember to lift with your knees, not your back!)

·         The Duck® brand offers several different sizes of corrugated boxes to help facilitate your move, all of which have a certified test strength of two hundred pounds. Use smaller boxes for heavier items to avoid excessive weight.

Tip 6

Take extra time to pack everything very carefully.

        ·         Use Bubble Wrap® cushioning material to separate and cushion fragile items.

·         Wrap each item separately.

·         Use extra Bubble Wrap to fill in the empty spaces in the box to minimize movement between items.

·         Pack plates and china vertically rather than stacked on top of each other.

Tip 7

Seal boxes with packaging tape like ®brand EZ Start ®Duck, which is specially coated so it always unrolls smoothly, quietly and easily every time, and will not split or tear.

        ·         In addition, EZ Start® does not fall back onto the roll, which makes application more convenient.

·         Once sealed, label the box and its contents.

·         This will help save a lot of time while simultaneously helping to keep boxes closed.

Tip 8

Make sure to clearly label all the boxes with permanent marker.

        ·         This will help you identify where they need to go once you arrive at your new home.

·         Also, be sure to label which boxes contain fragile items.

Tip 9

Designate one room in your home where all boxes will be placed before the move. This will serve as a destination point while moving, and will decrease carrying and loading time.

Tip 10

Be sure to pack a small box that will be readily available after the move.

·         Label it your “first night kit.”

·         In it, put things like snacks, water, toiletries, medications, tools, phone books and a change of clothes. 

·         This will save you from having to scramble through closed boxes to find necessities.

Tip 11

Prepare the room before unpacking the boxes.

·         Make sure you clean out the area before you unpack and wipe down surfaces and walls. 

·         This is also a good time to apply Duck® brand Easy Liner™ shelf liner to drawers and shelves. 

·         Duck® brand shelf liner is machine-washable and will keep items from shifting while creating a barrier between your belongings and the surface. It also protects surfaces from stains and damage.
