Make sure the paint goes only where you want it to go

Painting anything other than a big, blank wall can seem intimidating to many people.  After all, it’s those intricate, detailed places like chair rails and baseboards that require a steadier hand and a lot more patience.

But don’t call a professional for the job just yet.  As long as you take the proper precautions to ensure your carpet, floors and walls are protected from splattering paint or an unsteady hand gone awry, the painting can be done in no time.

Painting Trim

Step 1 - Painting Baseboards

Use a sponge and bucket of soapy water to clean areas to be painted.

Step 2 - Painting Baseboards

Protect your flooring.

For Rooms with Carpet: Use a carpet masking tape to tape between baseboard and carpet.

For Room with Hardwood Floors: Apply a pre-taped drop cloth or a 2” painter’s tape to the floor against the baseboard.

Step 3 - Painting Baseboards

Use a pre-taped drop cloth to protect the rest of the floor from splatters. If you are only painting the baseboard, apply the pre-taped drop cloth to the masking tape. Otherwise, apply the pre-taped drop cloth to the carpet masking tape.

Step 4 - Painting Baseboards

Paint following manufacturer’s recommendations.

Step 5 - Painting Baseboards

Remove tape at a 90-degree angle before paint fully cures.
