Start off right
Before embarking on any paint job, a room must be properly prepared. While preparation is one of the most time-consuming parts, it’s the most critical in achieving a professional-looking and long-lasting paint job.
Step 1
Remove all of the furniture from the room. Push anything that cannot be moved into the center, away from the walls. Cover the remaining items with drop cloths.
Step 2
Take off all plates around light switches, electrical outlets and remove all articles from the wall.
Step 3
Patch and repair any holes or imperfections in the wall by filling with spackling compound and sanding down to a smooth finish. Use sandpaper to smooth out any rough surfaces on the wall that may have resulted from wallpaper paste and/or old paint jobs.
Step 4
Starting at the top of the wall and moving downward to the floor, wash down all of the walls in the room with a soapy rag. Make sure the walls are dry before painting.
Step 5
Use painter’s tape to mask off the trim and baseboards. Press firmly along the tape’s edge to make sure the tape is secure.
Step 6
Apply a primer, and you have successfully turned the room into your faux painting canvas.
Step 7
Always make sure the surface that you wish to tape is clean and dry. It is a good idea to clean every surface in advance using ordinary soap and water.
Step 8
Always test the performance of the painter’s tape in an inconspicuous place to see how well it works before masking the whole area.
Step 9
For sharper paint lines and to avoid seepage, be sure to apply extra pressure along the edges of tape just before painting.

Great tips -- it's easy to want to skip the prep work, but it makes a big difference in the long run.
