Home Weatherization Fast Facts

There are many quick and easy things you can do to help conserve time, energy and money this winter.  Here are some quick facts about protecting your home from the cold with home winterization.

Fact 1

Forty-six percent of annual heat loss is through and around glazed areas in windows and doors.

Fact 2

The most vulnerable windows for drafts are swinging windows and double-hung windows.

Fact 3

Self-adhesive weatherstripping requires a clean, dry surface.

Fact 4

Window insulator kits   and other home winterization items should be installed before the temperature drops below 40 degrees Fahrenheit or the surface will become too cold for the adhesive to stick properly.

Fact 5

An added benefit of reducing air infiltration through weatherstripping is to help stop dust, dirt and insects from entering the house.

Fact 6

The following basic hand tools should be all you’ll need for a complete weatherstripping job:

·         Measuring tape

·         Tin snips or heavy-duty scissors

·         Screwdriver

·         Hammer

·         Appropriate nails or screws

Fact 7

Read product packaging carefully for helpful recommendations. No single type of weatherstripping works well everywhere. You will probably need one type for doors, another for windows, etc.

Fact 8

The cost of home winterization can usually be paid back in energy savings in less than one year.

Fact 9

A little leak may not be considered a big deal, but a one-eighths-inch gap around an average window or door is equivalent to a 2” x 2” hole in an outside wall.

Interesting points -- I've never "weatherized" my house before. I definitely want to this year. Thanks!
