I choose to put butterflies on my dress for a few reasons. One being it was a celebration of spring and the warm weather. Another being that the represent new begging, and whats more of a new begging than being about to start university? Finally they also represent the freedom of souls of recently passed family members and friends.

I was inspired by the idea of my room. My room is painted as a turquoise ombre; bottom being the darkest and gets lighter towards the ceiling. I flipped it for my dress and added white and silver to accent the dress.

The inspiration for my dress came from mosaic artwork. Starting in the Mesopotamia in the 3rd millennium BC, mosaic art is built up from small individual irregular pieces to create a coherent pattern or image. Using iridescent duct tape, I attempted to recreate the look of the traditional handmade glass enamel in different colours making the dress interesting and unique from every angle the light hits it.

I was inspired by my mom, who is a seamstress, and her life in Russia before she moved to America. She lived in a very industrial city and I wanted to reflect that with geometric shapes and cool-toned colors. I really enjoyed making the skirt because I was able to figure out some techniques to ombre and make the diamond shape on the inside to bring in more details. Getting my mom's help with this dress was a great wait to bond with her before I have to leave for college.

In creating my dress for my senior prom, I wanted to embody a celestial, ethereal quality. When I made my moodboard to start my design process, I was influenced by pictures of clouds, light blue geodes, and the golden interiors of cathedrals. I chose to create a fitted dress with a corset bodice because I thought it would add an extra challenge to the already challenging medium. I will be studying Fashion Accessories Design at College for Creative Studies in the fall.

They say nothing can grow in the desert. But that’s the thing: droughts, dust storms, and the baking sun should be impossible for anything to withstand. So whatever life does sprout in the desert has to be strong to survive in that harsh environment.
They say nothing can grow in the desert. But against all odds, my city, Las Vegas, has been strong, diverse, and caring, even in the most pressing times. When the media and politicians tried to divide us following the mass shooting on October 1, 2017, we didn’t let them. Instead, we came together to grow as one community, one city, and one Vegas. When my city was hurting the most, I watched people of all different backgrounds come together to help the city heal.
My piece stems from a desire to heal the divides and distress in our world today. While many shy away from the thought of rainy days, rain is something we look forward to in Vegas. I created my prom dress to tell a story about the value of rainfall when the desert runs dry and the flowers lean closer to the ground. At such a demanding time in history, my city’s strength and endurance gives me hope that the rainy days will replenish our nation with the empathy we need to heal and blossom. The foundational blue color of my dress represents the scarce but beautiful rain water. The golden flowers and vines radiate how healing with the support of a strong and empathetic community can be a golden opportunity during “rough” times. My roots in the Indian culture sprout vividly in the traditional Indian gown that has a fitted body, a slit in the front of the dress, and a long flowy skirt. Its transparency mimics the loving embrace of the rain water as the skirt gracefully wraps around the simple pants.
Duck Tape’s Stuck at Prom Scholarship has allowed me to produce a piece that is designed to help my community heal. By looking at the brighter side of every situation and dancing in the rain, we can find strength and hope during these very trying times. When I put on my dress, I find incredible joy in running barefoot in the rain, designing my dreams, and springing change in my world.
They say nothing grows in the desert. I hope my dress proves them wrong.

My inspiration was historical leather outfits and the sea. The duct tape is layered so that the stiff material conforms well with my body, and the inside panels have detailed images of sea life. The back laces up so I can easily get in and out of the dress.

When my senior prom was canceled, I was so sad that my last night out was no longer happening. So, when I created this dress, I wanted it to reflect my favorite part of the night, the stars. I also wanted it to reflect one of my favorite decades: the fifties. I added layers to represent the end of the famous poodle skirt of the time period. These so delicately combined into what I like to call, a night out in the fifties

For my prom Duck tape tuxedo, I decided to create something that was a symbol of the strife the nation, the world really, has been through this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. I created a tuxedo that has a knight theme. Knights are known for their strength. They are also known for how they protect others and wage battle against the enemy. My school’s mascot is a knight, and as students, along with the faculty, we have engaged in a war against COVID-19. We have worked hard to protect our family from getting sick by sheltering in and not visiting them, like my Nana, for more than 100 days. Throughout it all we have exhibited strength in a stressful and dangerous time. Our senior year was altered by this all, yet we found ways to push through and celebrate the senior class’ achievements virtually. I incorporated various parts of what a medieval knight would wear including shoulder and knee armor, a shield on the back of the jacket, a gauntlet, and a face mask. I chose to use the grey instead of silver to make it look more like a suit. The maroon and blue are a tribute to my school as they are my school’s colors.

I am inspired by Micheal Cinco, the famous Fashion Designer who has a very beautiful and delicate style that he puts in his dresses, especially in his silhouettes. The theme I used was inspired by the ‘Beauty of Mother Nature’ which is at its best nowadays. I have used big 3D flowers to give a surface effect and made them look real and symbolize Love, Joy, Peace and Happiness; which we all need in the present Pandemic times. Yet I have introduced Gold into the design after being inspired by Baroque Art, which has brought an element of Elegance in the dress. Also, this has helped me reflect on the change in life taking place with the fact that now I am moving from High School to University to study Fashion Design at Ryerson, Toronto. It had been a challenging task to use duck tape like a fabric, especially while making complicated flowers, but I grew to learn a skill and also sharpen my creativity, and I enjoyed the process.

My zodiac sign inspired me. I am a Pisces which are two coy fish. So when I went to the store to buy duct tape I was unsure of what I wanted to create but once I found the duct tape that look like fish scales I knew exactly what to create.

The inspiration for this tux came from a company I created with my friends to help create and impact around the world one shirt at a time. RenderHope (the name of the company) uses the butterfly to symbolize the butterfly effect and how one small change or person can create a large impact around the world. In the current time we are living in throughout all of the isolation and troubles. We can focus on the positives and give hope around the world, find the good news and don’t be overwhelmed by all the bad. We may have a mask covering our faces, but that doesn’t mean that we should cover the smiles.

Inspiration:
My inspiration for my dress stemmed from the duality of our world’s current situation; quarantine has robbed many youth, including myself, of their many “lasts” such as prom, milestone birthdays, and graduation. Immeasurably worse, it has robbed many of their livelihoods and for some, their lives. While there is nothing that could avenge the devastation that this pandemic has brought upon us, many of us have learned to appreciate the brevity of life and the magnitude of its simple pleasures. This same principle of duality is expressed in my piece, in which I have constructed a two tiered godet skirt. In one sense, when it is worn as a two tiered piece, it has a certain grandeur, but when fashioned as a single tiered skirt, there is a simplistic elegance. In the creation of both the corset and the godet dresses, I wanted to show my architectural abilities through both the structure and elegance of the dress, since as of the fall, I will be majoring in architecture. The floral element is an homage to Gustav Klimt’s “Flower Garden” from his Neo Impressionism era, a period in which his appreciation for the details of a single moment were the prime focus. Today’s reality of social distancing guidelines taunt us with the silhouette of social freedom. Moments shared with our friends, family, and loved ones out in public, those in which the concern for our safety was not in sight or mind, remind us of their volatility and encourage us to contemplate our privilege and ability to act freely. Thus, my accessories pay homage to the ethereal femininity of Klimt’s Golden Phase, most notably The Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer, as well as The Kiss, that celebrates the power in freedom, which gives a sense of identity to my look, as these paintings have been a long term favorite of mine and inspiration for my other artistic endeavors. To close, I would like to extend my highest gratitude to Duck Brand for allowing me the opportunity to artistically actualize the beauty of the finite moments of life.
