As I started to consider how I wanted to go about designing my dream prom dress, I knew a few aspects I wanted to incorporate: sheer fabrics and corsetry. I love working with organza and chiffon in my designs and wanted to incorporate that into my dress. To achieve this with Duck Tape, I considered how I could create a colored sheerness. After experimenting I decided on spraying clear Duck Tape with a light layer of spray paint to maintain the sheerness, but give the illusion of a sheer fabric. I love experimenting and trying out new materials. In the past I have worked with sewing everything from large, real leaves to weaving yarn on a loom to create fabric. This challenge was such a fun and unique material to work with. The color scheme of the dress was an instinationius decision. I knew I wanted to work with mostly black and use small aspects of red to illuminate the design. The two colors work very well together and create a powerful contrast. I incorporated lace and butterflies into my design because I wanted to use what they represent, change and metamorphosis. In these current times, a butterfly is a perfect symbol of what I and many others hope to see for our future. I love this competition because it gives empowerment to the next generation, something I think would truly transform this world if there were more of it. If I were to win, it would help me pay for college to hopefully attend Parsons School of Design. I am so appreciative of this opportunity.
