My dress is inspired by the monarch butterfly, a symbol of transformation, resilience, and new beginnings. I chose its vibrant orange to reflect the joy and hope I feel as I graduate and step into the world. Like the monarch, which travels vast distances yet always finds its way home, I want this dress to represent strength, joy, and the support that carries us wherever we go. To bring that vision to life, I used recycled clothing as the base and spent hours cutting, layering, and assembling panels by hand to mimic fluttering wings. I also did not have a mannequin and had to construct the dress on myself, which added another level of difficulty to the process. The skirt’s weight made construction tricky, but each layer added depth, movement, and structure.

I’ve been obsessed with the circus for years, attending every show that comes to town, learning to juggle, sewing my own clown costumes, and even taking flying trapeze classes at my local circus center. I just can’t get enough. When I decided to enter this competition, I knew right away that I wanted to honor the community that has welcomed and inspired me. My design is based on the classic ringmaster costume, but with a twist. I blended both masculine and feminine elements to reflect the circus’s long history of playfully bending gender norms. I thought I knew exactly what I was doing, but quickly realized this project would be much more challenging than expected. After lots of trial and error, problem-solving, and a few setbacks, I created something I’m truly proud of. To me, this piece represents the center point of my circus journey and I hope you love it as much as I do!

This duct tape dress I created was inspired by my love for travel and the amazing bond I have w/ my mom, who raised me on her own. She's always encouraging me to try new things and explore. When I visited Australia, I fell in love with its nature and the ocean, especially the Great Barrier Reef. Sadly, the reef is losing its color and beauty, so I designed this dress to show off the incredible colors of the coral reef. It's made w/ lots of layers and details so you can really see the intricacies of it. My dream is to go to fashion school and use my designs to create something that is unique and has meaning. This scholarship would mean so much to me and help me to attend my dream college!

This swan dress is inspired by the elegance and innovation of Audrey Hepburn’s wardrobe in Funny Face, designed by Hubert de Givenchy and Edith Head. The dress joins the concepts of two iconic outfits from the film: the Givenchy bridal gown and the red strapless Paris gown. When planning, I wanted the simplicity and purity of the white to complement the fiery, romantic red in this yin and yang of fashion choices and color palette.
When I designed this dress, I was also inspired by the KISS acronym, which my dad taught me. The blunt but accurate acronym stands for “Keep it simple, stupid” and really influences my life and choices, including this swan dress and its natural, uncomplicated harmony. Overall, I want this piece to emphasize the power of balancing simplicity and elegance with a fiery, bold spirit.

My inspiration for my dress was vintage cakes as there are a variety of designs that can be done on a vintage cake. The design of my dress centers around four leaf clovers as the main design, along with ruffles, vines, and many layers of purple and white. I was really inspired by vintage cakes where the design was more nature based having elements such as vines, leaves, and flowers. Ultimately, I knew I wanted my dress to be purple because that it my favorite color but the white, green, and gold duct tape give the dress some contrast. This was my first time making a dress and it was quite challenging, but I learned a lot from this experience and had fun making a dress out of duct tape.

As a recent 2025 graduate of Kettering Fairmont High School, I wanted to draw inspiration from my favorite subject Greek Mythology that I took in attendance there. After studying different Greek gods, I was instantly drawn to Dionysus because of his unique look from the other gods I researched. When thinking of inspiration for my tuxedo, I kept going back to the natural flow of grapes in Dionysus’ hair and how recognizable this addition made him from other gods. In some imagery of Dionysus, you will see ivy and vines intertwined on his head. Oftentimes it will be in the form of a crown. Instead of making a crown, I wanted to depict ivy and vines climbing the tuxedo with grapes at the hem of the tux jacket and the focal point of a 3D grape cluster tie. I always thought capes were a cool addition to suits so I made the cape look like a lattice fence like you would see in a vineyard. To add a special touch, I created a cluster of grapes to the back panel. Just as Dionysus stood out to me with his distinct appearance, I wanted to go with a bold look that would set me apart at prom.

The inspiration behind my African themed suit allowed me to express my ability to show my heritage through art and self-expression. It was a way to celebrate my individuality, culture and creativity. The diversity and beauty of the African culture can get lost in today’s society and throughout history. After talking with my Mom and throwing some ideas around, I was able to come up with an idea for my theme after seeing some shots on social media of this year’s Met-Gala Black Dandyism theme. The Gala really inspired me to embrace my culture and add my own touch that fit my personality. The colors I worked with each have different meanings in the African culture. Red is often associated with the bloodshed of those who fought for freedom, black represents the people, their heritage, and gold signifies wealth, royalty, and spiritual purity. I am thankful for my heritage and background. My maternal and paternal grandparents and great-grandparents come from African and Native American descent. The feathers represent both cultures and also can represent masculinity, power and beauty. The lion on my shoulder represents my strength and leadership and the blue/teal are a symbol of protection. My grandparents have passed on but I know they watch over and protect me. It was great putting this together and talking about my heritage with my parents and what being African American means.

When my mom was in high school she was very into fashion prompting her to sew her own prom dress. Unfortunately that time was not as accepting of new or different and did not get the admiration it deserved. When I saw the featured gorgeous picture of her wearing the dress I knew I had to draw a spotlight back onto this design, inspiring my dress! I used aspects from the original photo and my own inspiration to make a modernized version, incorporating my passion for film design and dream to live in the “City of Stars.”

My inspiration for this tuxedo is a secret garden—because behind the “hidden door” lies the unexpected. The journey begins along an overgrown path, leading to a concealed entrance where possibilities await. Beyond that door are hope, inspiration, and new opportunities. I chose a key as my accessory to symbolize unlocking wisdom and success. The flowers throughout the garden represent new beginnings, while the leaves signify personal growth—as I prepare to start college in a new state and discover more about myself and the world around me. Each flower color carries meaning: love, health, enthusiasm, and energy. The bold color of the tuxedo itself represents confidence as I look toward the future. It was exciting to use Duck Tape in such a creative way and see my vision come to life!

When I was a little girl I always loved Beauty and the Beast. Whenever the song came on I would dance and twirl with joy (it didn't matter where I was). Belle was also my favorite princess. She was the only one with brown hair, loved to read, and never let a man tell her what to do if it wasn't right. She was everything 6-year-old me aspired to be. So, when I decided to do the Stuck At Prom competition, I played music to inspire my creativity. Then the song, "Beauty and the Beast," came on. All the sweet memories of me dancing and singing came back and I knew that I had to make Belle's dress my own. I started with the bodice, and then moved onto the skirt, and last, the roses. They are my favorite part of my dress. Not only is each of the handmade and unique, but they capture the romance and beauty of the Beauty and the Beast story. In conclusion, this dress was challenging, but also fulfilling because it allowed me to make "little me" so very happy.

The inspiration for my outfit came from the ongoing wars and conflicts around the world. I wanted to create something that honored those affected and reminded people of the human stories behind the headlines. Using 15 rolls of Duck Tape, I crafted a black mermaid-style dress featuring a flower over the heart, with each petal painted in the design of a different country’s flag. A white dove, symbolizing peace, appears throughout the accessories to complete the message. Behind every detail is a reminder that even in darkness, empathy can bloom, and we all have a part in choosing not to look away.

As technology advances, the way humankind treats our oceans and sea creatures continues to deteriorate. Too often, this reality is overlooked as people choose convenience and ignorance over confronting the damage we’ve caused. Through my jellyfish-inspired dress, I aim to showcase the beauty of marine creatures that need to be protected. To construct my dress, I used plastic table cloths layered in duct tape to work as my fabric and altered existing patterns to fit my needs. For many of the tendrils, I used clear duct tape covered in glitter and then cut those into spirals. It's never too late to start caring about the environment or the creatures in it. All of my excess materials were recycled, and I encourage all others to do the same!

When I was coming up with inspiration for my prom creation many different themes went through my mind. I eventually settled on making a tuxedo using colors inspired by the 1980’s. I love the music from this decade, and my stepdad and I have always loved riding around rocking out to 80’s songs blaring in the speakers. I also love the colors from this decade, and I think they are bright and fun. I feel that I would have made a great 80’s kid and that my personality fits in great with this time period. I also remembered that my high school is celebrating its 40th birthday this year with the first graduating class entering the school in 1985 making this the perfect choice.
I decided to go with the classic tuxedo look, that would fit into any decade. But I chose colors that I felt best represented the 80's.

My dress was inspired by my Aunt Katie who passed away this winter. I wanted to honor her because even though we weren't always super close, I always admired her strong will and ability to stand up for what she believed was right. The skirt of the dress resembles a flower because my aunt owned a flower farm with her husband, and she loved gardening with her family.

I really feel that this dress screams ‘class’, ‘bold’, ‘glitter’, ‘fun’ and most importantly, ’prom’. The high low skirt line falls elegantly, has a feminine and graceful look. The layered look comes from my love of folds and full skirts. My inspiration is also from some French designer dresses especially from the early twentieth century. I feel that few things say ‘prom’ and ‘glam’ like glitter, so I used it as much as possible, so much so where literally every surface of the dress is covered in glitter.

I am a graduating Pioneer High School senior, future Ferris State Bulldog, and proud creator of (probably) the world’s first duct tape tuxedo that transforms into a racing suit.
My design pays tribute to my idol, Japanese racing legend Keiichi Tsuchiya - known as the Drift King. Like his unique driving style, I wanted to take something fast and functional and make it stand out from the rest. The tux starts as a full racing suit, but with a flip of the collar, it transforms into an outfit worthy of prom night. Underneath, I wear a white dress shirt and checkered flag bow tie, both made from duck tape.I made the driving gloves from duck tape, decorated the helmet to imitate Keiichi's, and created a 3D boutonniere incorporating a small trophy.
Pursuing this project wasn’t just about trying to win a scholarship. To me, it was about mixing passion with purpose to help fund my future goals. I’m heading to Ferris State University this fall for a BS in Automotive Engineering, with dreams of working in performance motorsports, and possibly moving across the world to be in Japan, the heart of tuning culture.
That’s where the Duck Brand comes in. I’ve proudly and painstakingly incorporated your logos throughout the design because I’m hoping that by taking first place, you’ll be the sponsor that helps me shift into high gear. I also made sure to reach out to the Ferris State Marketing and Communications Department, who gave enthusiastic permission to use their logos in my creation.
So thank you for making a tape strong enough to stick my dreams together. I may be “Stuck at Prom”, but with your help I’ll be racing into the future.
And a fun fact - my brother was a Tux Runner Up in 2021, so entering is now a family tradition!
