I made this dress out of duct tape and dreams. I took what I had and created something one of a kind and beautiful. That's what black women do, no matter what, rain or shine, we still make a way and pave a path. The world may try to break us, but we will always show up golden.

I took inspiration from 1860’s formalwear. I am inspired by historical dress and choose this period after watching the 1994 Little Women. I used a hula hoop to give the skirt the shape of a hoop skirt which is typical of the period. I enjoy sewing and used my knowledge from that to make the pieces that I used to constrict the dress.

My dress and accessories, designed with an American flag theme, were inspired by my love of and loyalty to our amazing country. There are so many opportunities in America to become anything we choose to be. My desire to help make this country a better, safer place comes from my love for my community. The flag is a fantastic representation of all that means so much to me. My Duck Tape dress was made with no additional materials, and required many hours, as well as twenty rolls of Duck Tape to complete. The journey was long and hard, but has become one of the most fun, memorable and unique experiences I have ever had.

The inspiration for my gold sparkly duct tape suit came from the energy and boldness of live music performances. I’ve always admired how artists light up a stage, not just with their sound, but with their presence, their look, their confidence. I wanted to create something that captured that same vibe: loud, original, and unforgettable. Using duct tape was my way of turning something simple into something powerful, just like music turns everyday emotions into something extraordinary.

I wanted the dress to have a night theme, and I like to design dresses with a specific element in mind, do I chose the Queen of the Night flower. This flower blooms at night, and I thought it would nicely match the silver, blue and white color scheme.

This dress means a lot to me because it’s inspired by my mom. The roses are her favorite flower — she used to pick them for me when I was little, and they’ve always reminded me of her love. I chose the colors blue and gold because they represent integrity and optimism, which is exactly what she shows every day, even as we go through a hard time. The baby pink background is her favorite color, and it ties everything together. It was the perfect picture seeing her face as I walked down the stairs with it on and telling her the meaning behind why I made it.

My dress is heavily inspired by different elements of nature and I wanted to create a dress that embodied the minute yet extravagant beauty of it that can be found even in places where the natural is sparse. I love my hometown, because driving down even major highways one can find wildflowers growing along the grassy side of the road, adding splashes of scarlet and dandelion to what might otherwise be a dull grayish landscape.
I wanted to incorporate all of these elements of things I love into my dress, especially my love of nature’s beauty. If you look closely you can see tiny gold leaves on the bodice to complement the bold roses on the skirt. I decided to incorporate a cardinal into my accessories as a focal point. Not only is it a beautiful creature, but it is also representative of my hometown baseball team, The St. Louis Cardinals. Growing up my dad always watched Cardinal baseball games on tv, so watching them now always brings back nostalgia from when I was younger.
This dress weighs in at around 25 pounds. I used 56 rolls of Duck Tape, and made approximately 700 Duck Tape roses that I adhered to the dress. I made just about everything from scratch out of Duck Tape, including the hoop skirt underneath the dress which I constructed using hula hoops and Duck Tape.
This dress to me evokes feelings of gratitude and appreciation, for both the time, effort, and resilience that went into making this dress and the serene beauty it reflects of nature. Though I could never truly capture the beauty that nature holds, I am proud to have created a dress that I feel at the very least acts as a mirror held up to the beauty of the natural world. Beauty can be found anywhere you look; even in Duck Tape!

A lot of my inspiration for this dress came from my everlasting love for fantasy. I wanted this dress to dip into the world of fantasy by creating a design that is not only elegant and chic, but also a design that you could see a queen wearing. I wanted the design to feel fierce and imposing while also containing more modern concepts. To showcase both of these themes—that of fantasy and that of a fierce elegance—I opted for a corset top with cascading off-the-shoulder sleeves. I wanted this top to truly combine the real world and fantasy. I did this by making it fitted with both a lace-up back and laced-on shoulder straps. These elements were not only fashionable, but also made it easy to put the top on and to take it off. The contrast of the black and gold brought into play the fierce sense of power I was hoping to display, while the roses that littered the main part of the corset brought in a regal elegance. This allowed the corset to be fit for both a queen and a teen girl with an odd sense of fashion. For the skirt, I wanted to create something that had the air of a ball gown, but allowed you to move around in it without issue. The dragons won't slay themselves after all, especially if you’re tripping after them in a floor-length gown. I also wanted the skirt to be layered in order to bring back that fierce elegance, as well as pulling from a more modern idea of fashion. Then I wanted to have something that brings it all home. For this crucial step, I chose to add a gold “lace” to the skirt’s layers and the off-the-shoulder sleeves on the top. To me, these gold accents really brought out the idea of a fantasy queen sitting at her throne. The gold accents were elegant and tied all of my details together. I loved making this dress and I love how it turned out and I hope you do too!

I was inspired by the Romanov tragedy, a horrible mass murder that occurred in 1918. The Romanov family hid gems in their dresses which during the first round of fire kept them alive. The story to me is one of resilience and beauty. I have wanted to make a duct tape dress for YEARS and finally got to create one!

This duct tape suit is more than just a fun outfit, it’s a tribute to one of the best gifts I’ve ever received: my Jeep, a birthday present from my grandparents when I turned 18. I wanted to challenge myself by making something different, most girls make dresses out of duct tape, but I went for a full suit to show off my love for adventure, creativity, and of course, Jeeps. I cut out wave shapes, ducks, and layered colorful strips of tape to create a sunset effect across the front. The bottom of the pants even has tire tracks to symbolize how wild and exciting life can be when you’re on the road. I added little Jeep-inspired details too, like a rubber duck and a classic front grill, but made sure everything was original. I always keep duct tape, a tire iron, and WD-40 in my Jeep, because those three things can fix just about anything. Duck tape sticks to everything, and honestly, I try to live life the same way: colorful, useful, and ready for anything.

I have always loved playing with my family, being outside and crafting. Whether it was going for hike, going to the beach, playing in the backyard or crafting (especially with boxes and tape) I was as happy as a child can be. As I have gotten older my love for crafting has continued to grow and so has my love for nature and family, but especially the water. That is why I decided to bring together all of my favorite things into this Hawaiian ocean themed dress. As I embark on my next journey in life I will have this dress to remind me of what I love most.

My dream dress was a corset with a floor-length skirt. Because of Duck Tape I was able to go above and beyond my original plan. I was able to add a second skirt and add pretty detailing. This was an extremely fun and creative endeavor. I am really proud of my dress.

Hi! My name is Brittany. The inspiration behind this dress came from my childhood love for Disney princesses and the joy of dressing up. As I begin adulthood, I find myself reflecting on the wisdom my parents shared: "Don’t wish to grow up too soon." It's a gentle reminder that life is about cherishing both our past and the dreams of the future. In creating this dress, I sought to embody the magic of the princess I dreamed of being as a little girl, hoping to bring to life something she would have adored. I believe we can all hold onto that childlike wonder, and it's a beautiful journey we undertake together.
Now, let’s dive into my princess wildflower-making adventure! I took on the challenge of crafting a flowery gown in a dizzying array of colors: baby pink, baby blue, navy, white, and gold. Each bloom took a solid 15 minutes to create alone. Armed with squares of duck tape and a bit of origami finesse, I fashioned unique tape floral creations.
Next up was the dress structure. As the flowers piled on, I began to question if I was making a dress or preparing for a floral funeral! I constructed a skirt with enough flower volume to function as a parachute, then glued the blossoms into place, hopefully leaving no gaps.
Then came the upper body, which felt like a scene straight out of The Hunger Games—with duck tape! Draping my mannequin in tape and glue, I designed a pink corset that was part fashion statement, part adhesive nightmare. To top it off, I made DIY earrings with fringed gold tape and mini roses. For the bouquet, I simply tossed some roses onto a used duck tape roll—because why not? I had 49 of them!
Thank you for taking a look, and I hope you love my creation as much as I loved making it!

I hope to one day become a costumer and as I was looking for inspiration for this piece, I came across a 1940’s fashion plate. I fell in love with the silhouette, especially the large bow that compromised the neckline, and the chiffon pieces that created a widened hip. I thought about how I could achieve this with duck tape, and landed on Duck Brand packing tape (both normal and HD Clear). I made large swathes of clear tape panels to create the sleeves, hat and hip pads. I used the left over cardboard roll as the structured cuff, and bottom of the hat. I wanted to use as little “not tape” as possible so I also used the clear tape as a light lining layer for the entire piece. I wanted to make something that people would be surprised to learn was not Duck Tape, and make a futuristic dress. I figured if I was using Duck Tape I may as well make it as futuristic and fun as I could.

I wanted to stretch the limits of what I thought I could do, I wanted to try my hand at a runway worthy dress for me to wear. So I looked up multiple couture pieces and tried to find what made them unique, what made them stunning and awe inspiring. That factor, surprisingly enough, was feathers. Feathers have always been a staple of high fashion, a piece of the natural world that can be safely harvested and manipulated to create luxurious, inspiring garments. So I knew what I should make to mimic the contour I looked up to so much, a dress completely made of feathers. I knew it would stretch my limits as well, because I would have to make each and every feather by hand. Which I did, ruining a pair of scissors in the process, but I did it. Each feather was hand placed to create a unique effect, making sure they laid perfectly, overlapping in a similar way to actual birds. The end result was a magnificent, wholly unique dress that presented high fashion ideas through duct tape, a runway worthy dress just waiting for it’s time in the spotlight.
