I wanted my dress to feel fun, but also be well fitted and stylish. I made the dress a snug fit, to make it look more sleek. I added a unique pattern and belt piece to make the dress feel more fun. I

My dream dress was a corset with a floor-length skirt. Because of Duck Tape I was able to go above and beyond my original plan. I was able to add a second skirt and add pretty detailing. This was an extremely fun and creative endeavor. I am really proud of my dress.

Hi! My name is Brittany Blackwell. The inspiration behind this dress came from my childhood love for Disney princesses and the joy of dressing up. As I begin adulthood, I find myself reflecting on the wisdom my parents shared: "Don’t wish to grow up too soon." It's a gentle reminder that life is about cherishing both our past and the dreams of the future. In creating this dress, I sought to embody the magic of the princess I dreamed of being as a little girl, hoping to bring to life something she would have adored. I believe we can all hold onto that childlike wonder, and it's a beautiful journey we undertake together.
Now, let’s dive into my princess wildflower-making adventure! I took on the challenge of crafting a flowery gown in a dizzying array of colors: baby pink, baby blue, navy, white, and gold. Each bloom took a solid 15 minutes to create alone. Armed with squares of duck tape and a bit of origami finesse, I fashioned unique tape floral creations.
Next up was the dress structure. As the flowers piled on, I began to question if I was making a dress or preparing for a floral funeral! I constructed a skirt with enough flower volume to function as a parachute, then glued the blossoms into place, hopefully leaving no gaps.
Then came the upper body, which felt like a scene straight out of The Hunger Games—with duck tape! Draping my mannequin in tape and glue, I designed a pink corset that was part fashion statement, part adhesive nightmare. To top it off, I made DIY earrings with fringed gold tape and mini roses. For the bouquet, I simply tossed some roses onto a used duck tape roll—because why not? I had 49 of them!
Thank you for taking a look, and I hope you love my creation as much as I loved making it!

I hope to one day become a costumer and as I was looking for inspiration for this piece, I came across a 1940’s fashion plate. I fell in love with the silhouette, especially the large bow that compromised the neckline, and the chiffon pieces that created a widened hip. I thought about how I could achieve this with duck tape, and landed on Duck Brand packing tape (both normal and HD Clear). I made large swathes of clear tape panels to create the sleeves, hat and hip pads. I used the left over cardboard roll as the structured cuff, and bottom of the hat. I wanted to use as little “not tape” as possible so I also used the clear tape as a light lining layer for the entire piece. I wanted to make something that people would be surprised to learn was not Duck Tape, and make a futuristic dress. I figured if I was using Duck Tape I may as well make it as futuristic and fun as I could.

I wanted to stretch the limits of what I thought I could do, I wanted to try my hand at a runway worthy dress for me to wear. So I looked up multiple couture pieces and tried to find what made them unique, what made them stunning and awe inspiring. That factor, surprisingly enough, was feathers. Feathers have always been a staple of high fashion, a piece of the natural world that can be safely harvested and manipulated to create luxurious, inspiring garments. So I knew what I should make to mimic the contour I looked up to so much, a dress completely made of feathers. I knew it would stretch my limits as well, because I would have to make each and every feather by hand. Which I did, ruining a pair of scissors in the process, but I did it. Each feather was hand placed to create a unique effect, making sure they laid perfectly, overlapping in a similar way to actual birds. The end result was a magnificent, wholly unique dress that presented high fashion ideas through duct tape, a runway worthy dress just waiting for it’s time in the spotlight.

My dress was inspired by the musical artist Chappell Roan. With her music she represents an unapologetic expression of identity. With this dress I expressed myself exactly how I wanted too. I made my dress by following sewing patterns. I made fabric out of duct tape by taking duct tape and sticking the sticky side to itself. I then followed the patterns and cut them out of my duct tape fabric.

The first inspiration for my outfit comes from the South Asian culture, particularly around India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka where the saree is a common garment to be worn both on the day to day and for special occasions. My second inspiration is my beautiful friends who have familial roots in Nepal. They have shown me that it is important to appreciate your culture and remember where you came from, but it is also important to share your culture and traditions with others when you are able to because it can never hurt to gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of the way other people do certain things. I have also always loved to see sarees in all their different prints and colors because they are so intricate and absolutely stunning. Fashion design has always been a hobby of mine and I love learning about new cultures, so I wanted to try and sketch one myself, with the hope to one day bring the sketch to life so I may be able to wear it with reverence and understanding about the importance and tradition the saree holds. When going to make my design, since I already had the sketch, all I needed to do was bring the design off the paper and into real life using duct tape and other materials, which sounds easy enough, but through it all, I learned quite a bit about patience and I was able to unlock more of my creativity. The one thing I hope people take away from my creation is that all cultures deserve to be celebrated, appreciated, and treated with respect because all cultures are beautiful in their own way.

My inspiration for this dress was a gothic black detail with red spider webs on both the top and inside the train. I love the look of a high low dress and wanted to attempt a gothic style. I added a corset because I like the way it ties the dress together. I’ve never seen a goth high low prom dress before.

Titled "Love You With All My Heart," this dress is a celebration of my younger self and my high school experience. Additionally, this dress is a tribute to all of the people whose love transformed me like a butterfly, whose support healed my once bow-adorning inner child, and whose generosity of time and talents bloomed my intellectual curiosity and inner strength like a flower. As a senior in high school, the past four years have taught me to value who I am in my most honest and vulnerable form-- as symbolized by the anatomical heart on the front of the dress-- as well as how to cultivate and protect my gentle and optimistic qualities- as represented by the symbolic heart on the back of the dress. Together, the hearts highlight what love is to me: love is bold, love is genuine, and love is life-giving.
The accessories I chose to highlight with this dress include a "Senior" sash with signatures by many of my friends; a heart-shaped purse with hand-cut words attached, "Love you with all my [heart]"; two black gloves with three heart cutouts and a gold ruffle; two colorful and scale-like shoes with decorative gold bows, to match the black scaling details on the front of the bodice; and three unique necklaces to echo the pendant shape of the golden bodice detailing. During the creation of this dress, my greatest challenge was designing it in my small high school dorm room in Virginia without a sewing machine, a body form, or my mom and sister, who were hundreds of miles away. However, through these setbacks, I learned new duct-taping techniques and challenged my time management skills, my dedication, and my creativity. I am so happy with the results my 120 hours of work have produced and I am incredibly grateful to everyone who supported and inspired me, specifically my Mom and Dad (thank you for sending me duct tape and trusting me), Mariam (thank you for taking photos), and Ronan (thank you for having a cameo in my video). And finally, thank you for reading!

Growing up in a small Texas town, I was the only Asian kid around. I felt very isolated from many of my peers due to how different I looked, so I spent many of my formative years simply thinking I was ugly. As I got older, I slowly learned about the beauty of my culture, I learned how to do makeup that matched my features, and grew to be very proud of myself and my heritage. My dress is largely modeled after the Hanfu, the traditional Han Chinese dress of the second millennium BCE. The most striking characteristic of the Hanfu is in its flowing silhouette, achieved by layering transparent silk and chiffon. Due to Duct Tape’s versatile product selection, I was able to achieve this easily by adding paint onto clear Duct Tape. This formed the outer layer of the skirt. Every aspect of the dress was made with a flower motif in mind. The petal-like design of each panel of skirt and top match with the lotus at the top of the sleeves. My accessories are made to resemble traditional Chinese headwear. I wrapped golden Duct Tape around itself in a circular roll to make the metal chain and headpiece, then attached flowers cut out of Duct Tape. When I wear Hanfu, I feel beautiful in a way that I’ve never felt before. I am no longer ashamed of my heritage.

I made this dress in honor of my grandparents and my aunt who have passed away but meant so much to me growing up. My grandmothers symbol since passing has been butterflies, my aunt loved traveling and passed away from breast cancer, and my grandfather owned a car dealership, so when he passed my siblings and I received old license plates. I made it in pieces and then put it all together to make the dress. I started with just bases of tape and then slowly added layers. I then taped them all together and fitting it to my body.

My prom dress design is inspired by a bouquet of flowers tied with a ribbon and overflowing from a basket. I designed it to look like the flowers were freshly cut from a perennial garden and chose an array of beautiful colors and cut different petal designs to represent a variety of flowers, such as roses, apple blossoms, peonies, mums, starflowers, and violets.
